Backblaze is an online back-up startup with plan: to sell data back-up that’s simple enough for your grandmother to use, and to sell it at $5 a month.
The company, which currently allows users to access files from remote computers, will soon launch an iPhone app in the coming weeks. Yev Pusin, social marketer for Backblaze, said the move to an iPhone application is to meet consumer demand.
“We’re trying to minimize the amount of thinking you have to do,” Pusin said.
Backblaze is made to be user-friendly, automatically uploading all files on a computer after a user downloads its desktop application.
According to Pusin, Backblaze will debut the application in the coming weeks. The application will allow users to remotely download the file to their iDevice and modify or share a file however they see fit. The app will grant users access to all of the data available on both PC and Apple computers. Included in Backblaze’s back-up plans are external harddrives and access to previous versions of a given file.
But the iPhone application does have its limits. Pusin said, for now, the app will limit the size of file downloads to 30MB. There’s also the matter of competition. Both Carbonite and and CrashPlan have mobile applications for iPhone, Android and Blackberry, according to The Next Web, with many of the same features as Backblaze. What those don’t have, however, is the record of restoring nearly 2.5 billion for restored files, according to its blog. The company restored 280 terabytes in December 2012 alone.
Pusin said the company uses consumer-grade parts to create their servers. Each storage pod holds 135 terabytes for the relatively cheap price of $7,867. Their Oakland-based server farm totals, according to CNET, roughly 45 petabytes of data. Pusin said all data is automatically encoded with 128-bit encryption.
Corrected at 5:30 p.m. PST: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Backblaze’s storage pods hold 67 terabytes. The correct number is 135 terabytes.
