Microsoft has launched a scathing attack on Google’s privacy practices in an attempt to win customers over to Outlook.

<p>Microsoft has launched a scathing attack on Google’s privacy practices in an attempt to win customers over to Outlook. The tactic looks to be the work of a former political advisor to Bill and Hillary Clinton.</p>
<p>The campaign is the continuation of a previous attack on the Google Shopping tool. Microsoft is trying to combine both attacks under a somewhat clunky slogan suggesting that customers have been “Scroogled.” <br>
The point of contention here is the way Google’s computers scan the contents of Gmail messages to deliver more relevant advertising at the top of the screen when you read the message. Microsoft contends this is a complete invasion of privacy and that many users are unaware of it. It also stresses that Outlook doesn’t use such tactics.<br>
A dedicated website for the campaign cites a survey of Gmail users that shows 87 percent “believe using email content to serve ads is an invasion of their privacy.” Rather oddly the same survey found that 71 percent of Gmail users were unaware of the practice.<br>
That appears to mean that nearly one in five Gmail users known what Google is doing, think it’s an invasion of privacy, and use the service anyway. It’s certainly a comprehensive piece of work, complete with statistics, quotes (Google chief Eric Schmidt saying “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it”) and dramatic videos.<br>
One of these even shows a close- up of a face with the eyes reacting to the contents of an e-mail, heavily implying that a human<br>
being reads through Gmail messages. Google says that doesn’t happen, and it’s  certainly a practical impossibility that it’s standard practice. The attacks are said to have had some input from Mark Penn, a former political campaigner who now works for Microsoft. He’s previously told the Wall Street Journal that Microsoft needs to do more to get die-hard Google users to consider breaking their habits. It doesn’t seem as if consumers are too taken with the issue however. As part of the campaign Microsoft has set up a petition trying to force Google to stop scanning e mails. At the time of writing, a mere 2,186 people had signed it.</p>

<i>Judge Lucy Koh have made a series of rulings this week on the ongoing legal battles between the two companies. The various patent claims, based on alleged similarities between smartphones and tablets, are the subject of two totally separate trials, both overseen by Koh.</i><br />
<i>The first was the one that led to a $1.05 billion award against Samsung last year, while the second has yet to get to court and deals with devices released since the original dispute began.</i><br />
<i>On the original trial, Koh has issued four sets of rulings this week. The first is a simple rejection of Samsung’s suggestion that she throw the whole case out and start again because the way she ran the trial hearings wasn’t fair. The second ruling rejects Samsung’s claim that the Apple patents in question were simply too vague to be enforcable.</i><br />
<i>Koh’s third ruling involves the issue of whether Samsung committed its infringement wilfully, meaning it knew it was doing wrong. That can allow a judge to triple a damages award made by a</i><br />
<i>jury. Although the jury said Samsung had acted wilfully regarding five out of the seven cases, Koh has exercised her right to ignore this verdict and leave the damages award untouched. She says that although Samsung did indeed breach the patents and must pay the price for doing so, it reasonably (if incorrectly) believed it was acting within the law.</i><br />
<i>Finally Koh threw out a series of Apple objections that effectively asked her to overturn the jury’s decision to reject some of its patents, along with a request for an extra $400 million in compensation because, well, why not. </i><br />
<i>In effect then, Koh simply said everything decided in the original trial verdict stands. She still has to deal with a Samsung request that either she reduce the $1.05 billion or allow a new jury to decide a new figure, but this doesn’t look particularly likely to happen. Once that’s out the way we can move on to Samsung’s formal appeal against the original verdict.</i><br />
<i>Meanwhile, in the separate second case dealing with the later devices (which is set to make it to court in March 2014), Koh has refused an Apple application for a pre-trial sales ban on Samsung’s Galaxy</i><br />

Google’s dream plan to build their own cellular network just took one massive step closer to becoming a reality. How? The company is quietly building and testing a secret wireless LTE network on its campus in Mountain View, California, the <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/01/23/google-creating-wireless-network-but-for-what/" style="border: none; color: #21759b; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Wall Street Journal</em></a> reports.</div>

Here’re the details so far: the service will utilize frequencies from 2524 to 2625 megahertz, which will be directed through 50 base stations — both indoors and out — and will connect up to 200 devices. The network, according to its application for an experimental license, will use both directional and non-directional antennas and, as wireless engineer <a href="http://stevencrowley.com/2013/01/23/googles-confidential-test-might-be-a-super-dense-lte-network-using-clearwires-spectrum/" style="border: none; color: #21759b; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Steven Crowley</a> writes on his blog, “could have very high capacity for carrying data.”</div>

The frequency spectrum Google will be using is currently controlled by Clear wire Corp., a corporation which provides wireless broadband in a “licensed spectrum,” according to the WSJ. The spectrum has the potential of being more reliable than modern Wi-Fi signals. That reliability is also why Dish Network offered to buy <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130108/dish-network-makes-5-15-billion-offer-for-clearwire/" style="border: none; color: #21759b; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Clearwire for $5.15 billion</a> and is also why Google is negotiating with Dish to get a slice of that spectrum pie. Clearwire, however, is currently owned by Sprint, which isn’t too excited about the offer.</div>

Regardless of spectrum politics, Crowley suspects that the only reason to use these frequencies is to test or provide a mobile service. By this time electric-gas hybrids are rather common place.  Just about every automobile manufacturer has at least one model hybrid like this.  Then there are electric cars that are still a novelty for most people because of the still high purchase price.  Now Peugeot has decided to produce a different type of hybrid that uses compressed air with a gasoline engine to improve mileage and reduce emissions.  According to Peugeot, this type of hybrid could have a lower purchase price and maintenance cost than either electric-gas hybrids and electric cars while producing greatly reduced pollution.</div>

Gizmag reports that one reason why Peugeot’s new hybrid could cost less on both the original purchase price and maintenance is because compressed air tanks cost less than the massive battery packs that cars like Toyota’s Prius require.  Those battery packs are not only expensive but they are also heavy.  When they have to be replaced they cost around $4,500.  Unlike most auto parts, the hybrid system and battery pack can only be purchased from the dealer keeping the price high.</div>

The new hybrid, the PSA Peugeot Citroën, will be able to run in three different modes like most other hybrids.  It can run in gas only mode, compressed air only mode or combined mode.  Even when the car runs only on gas, Peugeot claims that there is a five percent fuel savings over comparable gas only cars.  The gas engine is used almost exclusively for speeds over 43 mph unless there is a need for rapid acceleration or you are driving up hill then the combined mode kicks in.</div>

The company claims that in Urban driving the car will show a 45 percent savings in fuel and a 90 percent increase in range because the compressed air system is expected to run 80 percent of the time.  Total combined city, highway fuel savings is expected to be 35 percent.</div>

The compressed air cylinder runs underneath the center of the car and doesn’t reduce storage space in the trunk nor does it add all the weight of a battery pack.  Regenerative braking helps recharge the tank similar to regenerative braking in electric and electric hybrid systems. Should the tank need to be replaced, the cost is much lower than replacing the hybrid systems in gas-electric cars.</div>

Acer reports that around five to ten percent of its shipments to the US since November have been Chromebooks and that it expects to maintain that percentage in the long-term. HP hasn’t yet made an official announcement, but mistakenly put up a document on its website detailing what it will call a Pavillion Chromebook. The most notable point there is that the device will apparently sport a 14 inch screen, well above the biggest Chromebook models already available.</div>

There’ll be a price to pay though: battery life looks to be considerably reduced, down to a little over four hours. That said, with it being so reliant on an internet connection, it may be a device most users will run near a power point anyway.</div>

Lenovo has confirmed it will release both laptop and desktop machines running the Chrome OS this year. Perhaps surprisingly it looks to be targeting business users as much as consumer. Its thinking is that businesses will be prepared to pay a reasonable price for the device in the knowledge (and/or hope) that it will save in the long run by not having to spend as much licensing Microsoft products, paying for support, or dealing with the hassle of malware threats.</div>

Business-favorite phone company Research in Motion has unveilied their last-ditch effort to stay in the smartphone game. While the phone mays not have been much of a surprise — the touch-screen phone and prototypes were openly discussed in May of 2012 — the name change was. That change is manifested in the Z10, BlackBerry’s widely anticipated touch-screen phone, which will launch mid-March in the U.S. for $199, according to <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">The Verge</em>. The phone will be offered in black and white, though the white model is exclusive to Verizon. As for guts, the Z10 features a dual-core CPU, a 4.2-inch display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage (expandable to 48GB with a microSD card), a front-facing 2 megapixel camera, and a 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. Both cameras, notes The Verge, are capable of HD video (1080 for the rear camera, 720 for the front). Those residing in the U.K. will be able to get the Z10 on Thursday, January 31st.</div>

The BlackBerry Q10, which is set to launch much later than the Z10, will feature a physical QWERTY keyboard — a favorite of many BlackBerry fans — and a touch-screen. Access to the Q10 was heavily restricted, so details on its internal features are scant.</div>

But will a simple name-change and what some reporters consider to be BlackBerry’s most competitive phones in history be enough to save the company? The game has already been announced for the PS3 and Xbox 360, so it would have taken some kind of covert, under-the-radar operation for either Sony or Microsoft to influence the timing of the release. But the iPhone application does have its limits. Pusin said, for now, the app will limit the size of file downloads to 30MB. There’s also the matter of competition. Both Carbonite and and CrashPlan have mobile applications for iPhone, Android and Blackberry, according to <a href="http://thenextweb.com/apps/2013/01/30/backblaze-launches-iphone-app-backblaze-mobile/" style="border: none; color: #21759b; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">The Next Web</em></a>, with many of the same features as Backblaze. What those don’t have, however, is the record of restoring nearly 2.5 billion for restored files, according to its blog. The company restored 280 terabytes in December 2012 alone.</div>

Pusin said the company uses consumer-grade parts to create their servers. Each storage pod holds 135 terabytes for the relatively cheap price of $7,867. Their Oakland-based server farm totals, according to <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-57566698-2/backblaze-iphone-app-gives-access-to-online-backups/" style="border: none; color: #21759b; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">CNET</em></a>, roughly 45 petabytes of data. Pusin said all data is automatically encoded with 128-bit encryption.</div>
